Score My Essay

Introduction

Score your college admissions essay with our custom admissions essay word-scoring model. To generate this model, we applied various natural language processing methods to a painstakingly harvested and munged corpus of admissions essays. Currently our model-training corpus is composed solely of essays written by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) admitted students.

Understanding The Model

The model we developed, called FR-DF, has a relatively straight forward goal: to generate a vocabulary from a text corpus, and score the words in the vocabulary based on relevance and density. The output of this model is a dictionary of word/score pairs for every word in the vocabulary. This dictionary of scores can then be used to score a text document, which is exactly how it will be used to score your essay.

Interpreting My Score

The main score to focus on is the Relevance-Density Score (RDS). This score is the average score per word and is generated by taking the Total Score (calculated by summing the individual FR-DF word scores) and dividing by the Total Words (calculated and displayed directly below the essay input box). Think of this like a measure of word efficiency or value density.

Once a score is calculated, you can compare it to the score data of different colleges in table 1 below. This will give you some idea of how your essay compares to the essay of the average admitted students of the colleges below.

Table 1: RDS data for different colleges.
College Mean Maximum Minimum
JHU 0.6590 0.8271 0.4583
